I understand from family that my grandfather, George Golding was a Territorial and went to France with the Worc's to join the BEF. He was injured, captured and spent the war in a POW camp in Poland we think.
Again not confirmed but we think he was captured at La Bassee Canal.

I would be grateful for any more information.

Hi Phil,

I can confirm that Private George Golding (5252277) was a prisoner of war and held at Stalag 21D his prisoner of war number was 36803.

Stalag 21D (also referred to as Stalag XXID) was at Posen, Poland (Poznan).

Louis

thanks Louis. Only now it's a bit confusing as from research I've done it was the 7th and 8th Battalions that were sebt to the La Canal Bassee and I thought the 1st were in North Africa at the time. From the POW records it says that he was from the 1st Battalion. Can you clarify?

Hi Phil,

As he was not on the original POW list I had for the 7th and 8th Battalions I assumed it would now seem wrongly that he was with the 1st Battalion.

If he was caputured in 1940 at La Bassee Canal he must have been with either the 7th or 8th Battalion.

I will amend the website to reflect the above.

Do you know which Battalion he was with?

Regards,

Louis
