Ernest Crow, Corporal 2nd Battalion

Postby HelenG » Mon Jun 16, 2008 3:39 pm

This is my first post on this site so please be gentle with me.

I admit to knowing nothing about military history and even less about the difference between battalions and regiments.

However, from his marriage certificate I do know that my Great grandfather, Ernest Crow was a Corporall in the 2nd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment, living at Norton Barracks, 3rd October 1887.

By the 1891 census he was nolonger in the army but I can't find him on the 1901 census. Family folklore has it that he was away in the Boer War. This is partly based on the fact that he had 8 children by his wife Jane between 1887 and 1899 and then had 3 more starting 1902-1909. The gap in between was supposed to be caused by the war?

Anyway, I would be very grateful to hear of any information anyone has about Ernest Crow and also if someone could advise me if it was accepted practice to rejoin the army after a break?

Thanks for taking the trouble to read this

Hi Helen,

During the First World War the maximum age for concription was 56 years of age. So it is most likely he was called up to serve in 1914.

What was his year of birth and place of birth?

Thanks for your reply.

Ernest Crow was born Redditch Worcs 1865 so he would have been to old for WW1 unless he lied about his age.

Hi Helen,

The Public Records Office show he was born in 1866 which would make him 48 years of age in 1914 so it is quite possible he was still called up for service as 56 years was the age limit.

The other information I found was that his parents were William Charles Crow and Mary Ann Crow (nee Robins). They had 6 children including Ernest - details below:
Ann Eliza - born 1854
Clorinda Phoebe - born 1856 (she married in 1874)
Laura Lavinia - born 1858 (married Dan Holloway)
Edgar - Born 1859
Ruth - born 1864
Ernest - born 1866

His father William Charles Crow died in 1890.

As far as the Boer War is concerned you could check the Boer War medal roll which is held at the Public Records Office at Kew.
