How do I find out his Bn from his number

Postby DCLI » Wed Nov 12, 2008 7:16 pm

I am trying to find out which Bn my great uncle served in. He joined on September 2 1914 - he was Private 17969 Frank Edward Johnson.

Thank you

Hi Anthony,

If you have his medal index card then you will have the reference numbers to look him up on the Medal Roll which is held at the National Archives at Kew. That Roll should tell you which Battalion he was in.

His Medal Index Card shows he landed in France on the 12-1-1915.

Many thanks

Thast's a good start. I do have his MIC.
And the fact he landed on Feb 1st could indicate which Bn he was in.

Sorry to be so dim but which numbers relate to the Medal Roll? And is the Medal Roll avaiable on-line?

I notice his medals are all MGC.

Regards

Anthony
