hi can you help me find out about my grandfather pte alfred phipps mm army no 201898 4th bat y company.thanks.by the way my name is terry.

the oldbury roll of honour states
pte phipps was the husband of mrs s a phipps of 80 juction street, brades village, he was killed in action between ypres and menin. he had been awarded the military medal for action on 8th august 1918 during an advance in the lys vally, where he was on patrol which fought hand to hand with the germans , killing two and taking two prisioners

hi thanks for the information ,this information can also be found in a book called the fallen,its about the men of oldbury and the surrounding areas.this is how i found out about my grandad,my mother who will be 91 in june was born at that address,she never saw her dad because he died in the sept.my sister who is helping me with the history of our grandad thinks he was on leave in the oct/nov 1917 and he went back to the front but i think he joined the army late ,is that possible?and were can i find out?again thank you for your help .

hi terry,
i have checked his medal index card on ancestry and it has his orginal number as 4410 and later the number 201898
my guess is that he was a 2/7 worcesters man and got sick or wounded and send back to uk. on returning to france was placed into the 4th worcesters
