Postby MAML » Thu Jun 16, 2011 6:22 pm

Hello

I was wondering if you could help me with some information about my GG Uncle, Thomas Dinsmore Messem. I have seen his medal card but have no idea what most of it means.

Many Thanks

Michael

Hi Michael,

Thomas Dismore Messem (11024)

Medal index card show:

2 Worc R - Pte 11024 which means he served with the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment with rank of Private army number 11024.
2 Worc R - Cpl 11024 which means he continued to serve with the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment and was promotted to rank of Corporal army number 11024.

The references to the Medal Roll show:

He was awarded
Victory Medal - Ref. Roll number L/102B20 Page 4324
British War Medal - Ref. Roll number L/102B20 Page 4324
1914 Star Medal _ Ref. Roll number L/2/3 Page 65
The Roll number and Page numbers refer to the Medal Roll and would allow you to look up details on that roll. They are held at the National Archives at Kew.

Clasp & Roses - show that he was awarded a Bar (clasp) to his 1914 Star Medal and a Rose for that medals ribbon.
The 1914 Star Medal was awarded for service in France and Flanders between 5th August and 22nd November 1914. In 1919 a clasp bearing the above dates was authorised and given to those individuals who had actually been under fire between the prescribed dates.
There is also reference numbers to this issue of the Clasp and Roses and it shows he was awarded this on the 10th December 1920.

SWB List L A 348 shows that he was awarded the Silver War Badge with reference number. This was awarded to men who could no longer serve due to wounds or illness. There is a whole section of this on the website which should be of interest. You can also get more details from the Silver War Badge Roll held at Kew with these reference details. This will give further information showing when he enlisted and when he was discharged.

Date of entry therein - shows he entered the Theatre of war on the 12th August 1914. As he was with the 2nd Battalion he would have landed with them in France at Boulogne on the 14th August 1914. Checkout the section on the 2nd Battalion on the website for more information.

Hope the above is some help.
