Sgt. William Shaw 11028

Postby Archdale » Thu Jul 14, 2011 6:08 am

Hi, we are looking for any information regarding a Sergeant William Shaw (Grandfather)
Number 11028.
We believe he was an instructor of some sort at Norton Barracks after the war. We have 3 medals in our position.
We understand that he left the army in 1925 or 1926. Serving in Egypt prior to WW1 & several other campaigns.
No other information is known what so ever. We would like to try and trace him on the 1911, but we have no information where he originally came from.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, I do have a record of 11028 Shaw but the initial given is A. This guy does fit the bill though. He was in the 1st Bn. who were in Egypt just prior to the Great War. He landed in France on 5th November 1914 and won the 1914 Star. It was a very bad winter and 400 of the Bn, were invalided home with Frostbite before Christmas. You may be in luck with a foto of him on this website. All of the Bn. were fotod in great detail whilst in Egypt. The fotos are in the foto section. He was a L/Cpl in 1914.
Hope this helps Mike Jones

Hi Mike, many thanks for your input regarding the relative concerned.
I confirm we have a set of medals for W. Shaw Number 11028 and we have always been told he was William Shaw.
Also there is a cabinet in Worcester Cathedral which hold the names of all officers, NCO's and men of the second and 3rd battalion who embarked for France in August 1914
One of the names in the third battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment is L/corp W. Shaw. We have been told this is our direct line.

Medals we have with W. Shaw are as follows: 1914-18 medal ( round one with blue , white and orange ribbons)
Bronze medal for the Great War for Civilisation 1914-1919 ( purple, blue, green yellow and red ribbons)
1914 Star (blue white and red ribbons)
Both medals ( excluding Star) has 11028 Sjt. W. Shaw Worc.R.

In your reply you mentioned he was possibly with the 1st Battalion, but above information is in conflict to that, would he have been transfered or such.
Sorry for my lack of knowledge on the subject.
Could you confirm if all his military records could be obtained by us. Re the photo you mentioned, we are still investigation what is available.

Many thanks for your input

Hi Keith,

Lance Corporal W. Shaw on the 3rd Battalion roll at Worcester Cathedral is Walter Shaw with army number 9324. This Walter Shaw was never a Sergeant. So it is not the one your looking for.

Thanks Louis , yet another family story gone awry!
Strange, though as my father in law (ex Royal Marines & William Shaw's son) was a stickler for detail & correct information
We will carry on digging; all we have are his medals, no other information on him, his family, or where he came from.
Family stories say from London, but a needle in the proverbial as they say.
After a search of all census information we did find on the 1911 census a Private William Shaw of 1 Worcestershire Regiment at Albany Barracks, Isle of White Age 22 Born Hampstead, Middlesex ( which seems to fit the correct profile we have been given & seems promising) BUT still no firm confirmation we are “tracing” the correct Shaw.

Many thanks for your time.
