According to his medal index card it looks like the 2nd batallion. 2nd and 3rd would be different batallions, did he serve in both? Have you PlumPudding the card to check any information there?

Kind regards,
Lars

Hi Kev,

From what you have said Pte. James Butler (7538) initially joined the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in 1903. It is very likely he joined for 12 years made up of 3 years with the Regular Army followed by 9 years in the Reserves. This would make sense as when the First World War started in August 1914 he would have been called up again to serve in the Regular Army - this time he was posted to the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment and disembarked on the 11th August 1914 with the men of the 2nd Battalion for France.

As you say he was wounded on the 28th October 1914. He must have rejoined the 2nd Battalion after he recovered from his wounds as he was not discharged from the Army until the 22nd February 1916 - this would suggest he was wounded a second time but this time could not return. You will notice that on his Medal Index Card in "Remarks" section there is the word "Disc" confirming that he was discharged from the army (but no date is shown).

Hope the above is of help.

Regards,

Louis

Hello Kev,
at the moment I cant add anything to what the others have already told you. I may be able to point you towards another source of information, that may tell us what James was doing between 1907 and 1914. Did James have any children in this period? If he did, on their birth certificate will be his occupation at that time. If you have some rough dates and details, Louis or myself could check them out and get you the reference numbers you need to get the certificates.
You already have some good information. How do you know he was wounded on 28.10.1914, please? This bit of information would help me with reporting casualty details. Where did the bit of information about the date of his discharge come from ? It is not on his Medal Index Card and his service record is not on Ancestry.
Regards Mike
Edit. I have had to edit my posting. His service record IS on Ancestry but under the pension records. All is revealed.

Hi Kev,
I am still not quite sure of what documents you have seen. There are 8 pages on his Ancestry records and interesting stuff it is. It tells the whole story, which was a bit colourful at times. He was in the South Staffs. Militia before he joined the Worcesters aged 18 years. He was in the 3rd Battalion Worcesters for only 9 months, when he got in to trouble. In January 1904 he was posted to the 2nd Bn., spent 9 months in South Africa in 1904 and the next 15 months in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). He was discharged to the Reserve January 1906. He was moblised in August 1914 and posted to the 2nd Bn. He got into trouble in September 1914, not for the 1st time by the way. As you know he was wounded in Oct. 1914. Came to England in Jan. 1915. In August 1915 he was posted to the 4th Bn. in Gallipoli. He came home from there 12.3.1916 in preparation for his discharge, which was because his time was finished. He is listed as having 4 children but not in the order you say. Ellen 28.11.06 ; Winifred 31.08.1911 ; Thomas 10.08.1913 and James 15.11.1914.
Hope this clears things up. Regards Mike
