inherited QSA medal

Postby asturmer » Thu Apr 14, 2011 1:33 pm

I have inherited a Queen South Africa medal for Private D Jones, 4740 Worcester Regt with bars for Wittebergen, Transvaal and Cape colony. Can anyone give me feedback on this medal and its recipient, or any information on what is Wittebergen and the actions of the Worcestershire Regt during the Boer War?

Hi,

The bars on his medal relate to:

STATE BARS
Cape Colony - which coved the period 11th October 1899 to 31st May 1902
Transvaal - which coved the period 24th May 1900 to 31st May 1902

BATTLE BAR
Wittebergen - which coved the period 1st to 29th July 1900
During early July 1900, the movements included the Battle of Bakenkop and the attack and capture of the town of Bethlehem. The 'bar' for these engagements are simply titled 'Wittebergen', although this was really only a focal point of the general area of a number of engagements and battles during that period of time.

It is likely that Private D. Jones served with the 2nd Battalion.

Check out the section on the Boer War on this website in the HISTORY section.

Hope this helps a little.
