Orange Free State, Transval, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902

46855 WOII F.F. Smith

BWM 1914-1919

Victory Medal

He was born in the parish of Napton Hill, Nr Leominster on 23 April 1881. His father was Charles Smith, a carpenter I believe. Before he enlisted in 1899 he was employed as a labourer. His first period of miliutary service ended in 1907. He then went on to become a groom and then a Carrier working out of Tewksbury/Cheltenahm/Charlton Kings surrounding areas. He married my grandmother, Margarer Dwyer in the Catholic Church, Leominster in 1907. He served in the reserves from 1907 to 1914 when he rejoined the colours. He also served in the Motor Machine Gun Service (RFA) from 1915 to 1917. During his WW1 service his wife and family lived at 'Knightsbridge', Coombe Hill. After his army service which ended in 1920 he joined the Automobile Association as a Motor Road Scout in South Wales. His mode of transport was a push bike! Then progressed to a motorcycle. He always laid claim to have been the first AA patrolman in Wales (Unconfirmed). He had by now moved his family to Barry in South Wales. He died in Cardiff in Feb 67.

Thanks for the tip Mike.
