Hi
Can anyone help? Im new at this so im not to good.
My grandfather was in the Worcester's during around 1920 till about 1946.
His name was Thomas Griffin, number 5243716, rank CQMS. I think he was in the 2nd battilion and maybe in C company. He was born in 1903. He also got married while he was in the army to Mary, my father and aunty was then born in India where my grandfather served.
Does anyone have any recognition of my grandfather or any other records. I would be over joyed if anyone does.
I also have a photo that I would like to submit of him, if that is of any help.
I have found this web site so interesting and the photos are fascinating.
Thank you for your time.

Hello Sharon,
welcome to the Forum, you have ticked all the right boxes that get my interest. The trouble is I dont have any information on dates after 1919 to give you. All is not lost though, as I do know who has the information you want ! This website is not part of the Worcestershire Regiment setup, it is independant of them. They are the ones with the Archives and millions of photos. Regimental Archives at Norton Barracks have the Enlistment ledgers from 1919 on. Your grandfather will be in them. Lots and lots of lovely information on him. They are a registered charity and a small donation will help preserve the very archives that will be helping you .
Regards Mike

Hi Mike
Thank you so much for you reply, I do appreciate your time.
Excuse me for being so vague (im no good at all of this as you can see!!) How do i go ahead and get the archives, do I have to go to a different web site? Or a records office? im very confused by it all. Im totally hopeless i know!!
From what I can gather my grandfather lead a very interesting life, my father tells me many stories about his life in India during my grandfather's service time. Im lucky that i know some stories about my grandfathers life. I do find it all very interesting and I am very proud of my grandfather as I am of all the men in service. I am so keen on finding out more of my grandfather records.
Thank you once more Mike

Hi Sharon,
It was all very confusing for all of when we started. There are so many names and strange terms. Louis Scully, who is the brains, drive and money behind the Forum, has made it easy to Contact Regimental Archives.
Click on the "Home" page logo in the list on the left hand side of the page. When that comes up scroll right down to the bottom of the page and there is a direct link to the researchers at the Worcestershire Regiment Archives.
Happy hunting Mike

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for submitting the photo of your grandfather C.Q.M.S. Thomas Griffin which I have now added to the PHOTOS section of this website with some additional information as detailed below:

C.Q.M.S. Thomas Griffin (5243716) - 'C' Company, 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment
He served in the Worcester Regiment from 1920 to 1946. Promoted to rank of Sergeant on 22.2.1929 and promoted to Company Quartermaster Sergeant (C.Q.M.S) on the 27.2.1938. Serving mainly with the 2nd Battalion in both 'A' (as Sergeant) and 'C' Company (as C.Q.M.S.).

During 1933 to 1934 he served at the Depot. during which time he played in the Depot. football team as goalkeeper.

In 1937 he was a member of the 2nd Battalion shooting team (16 in the team) that won The Brooke Bond Cup (A.R.A. Competition) in India. Their winning score was 963 of which Thomas Griffin scored 47.

In January 1938 he was the winner of the Silver Spoon for the highest score in the Sergeants Mess Shoot.

He married Mary E. Brown (19.6.1929) at Devonport while servicing with the 2nd battalion, they had 5 children, their first child a daughter was born 28.9.1930 at Devonport, the second daughter Judith Shelia born 7.6.1936 at Tientsin, China (died 7.12.1937 at Colaba, India), Tom Griffin, Geoffrey Allen Griffin born 4.4.1938 at Kasauli, India, Audrey I. Griffin born 1939 at Murree, India.

I also found some information which mentioned his wife Mary Griffin at the 1937 (Saturday 25th December) 2nd Battalion Christmas Fancy Dress Dance dressed as "Pierrette".

You mentioned he had 4 children but I found another daughter born on 28.9.1930 at Devonport while he was serving there with 2nd battalion (I do not have details of her first Name!). You mentioned a son called Tom I could find no details of him - do you have any?

Best regards,

Louis (webmaster)

HI
I would like to thank all involved in researching information on my grandfather Thomas Griffin. I read it all with much interest and fascination. Thank you also for submitting his photo.
Regarding his son Tom, he was born in South Shields on 20th August either 1931 or 1932. Mary his mother was actually from South Shield. Could it be that you do not have any information on Tom with him being born in South Shields. He was actually born before Judith was born. He can recall the story of him being aboard a ship and being in hospital on the ship while Judith was ill, Tom slipped on the deck of the ship and developed concussion. Judith very sadly died on consumption.
Tom now resides in Australia, he was also in service in the UK but I am not sure what regiment, I do think he was in the Para's.
Would you know of the medals my grandfather Thomas Griffin was awarded during his time in service?
Thank you so much once more for all of your time and effort with researching my grandfathers service time. It is all very much appreciated.
I look foward to hearing from you soon
Sharon

I see my cousin Andrew McClaren has now got the research bug and is tracing some information on his grandfather.
All very interesting stuff.
Hoping to through some light on the elder daughter, if there was one. For definate Tom was born in 1930.
Thank you once again, hope all is well with yourselves

Hi All
Just to update on Thomas Griffin. I have received some records from The Worcestershire Regiment Museum Trust. He was in service from 1920 till 1942. He started life in the Territorial Force and was re-enlisted in 8th Bn on 3rd July 1921.
There is no record of a daughter born in 1930 but it does show that Tom the eldest son was born in the UK.
Thomas's next of kin when he joined the army was his brother Charlie Griffin who was believed to have served in C Coy, 2nd Bn. So I was thinking could this daughter born 28th September 1930 actually be Charlie's daughter? Its a long shot but may be possible. Im not sure if the brothers Thomas and Charlie served in Devenport at the same time.
Thank you all for your time
Sharon
