Worcestershire Regt and the Thailand-Burma Railway

Postby tbrc » Wed Jun 06, 2007 5:34 am

I am researching Albert Ernest Leslie LANE, a 2nd Battalion man who died on the Thailand-Burma Railway on 6th September 1943. He was the ONLY Worcestershire Regt man to die on this railway project as a prisoner of the Japanese. He worked on the Thailand section of the railway in one of the highest casualty work forces of that project.
There is no mention of the Worcestershire Regt having been involved in any action that would result in being held in captivity in Java or Singapore which is where the working parties for the Thai-Burma Railway were taken from.
Can anyone throw any light on why Albert LANE may have ended up in Changi, Singapore, perhaps the ONLY man of the regiment to do so (or at least one of just a few).
Albert Lane came from Reading, Berkshire, the son of Albert & Minnie LANE. He died at age 30 and is buried at the CWGC Cemetery in Thanbyuzayat, Myanmar (Burma) having died of illness during construction of the railway.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
