Grandads WW2 History

Postby CMTaylor » Thu Apr 18, 2013 11:37 am

Hi im looking in the histories of the battalions my Grandad served in before & during WW2, I sent away for his service records & this is what I found out,

Name: Edward Butt
Service Number: 5248957
Rank: Private / Fusillier

Service Record:
He served in the Worcester Regiment, 7th Battalion (TA) between 08-01-1931 & 07-01-1935,
He rejoined the Worcester Regiment in the 2nd World War, Originally in the 11th Battalion on the 17-07-1940,
Transferred into the 1st Battalion on the 01-01-1943,
Drafted into something called RN00A on the 18-05-1943,
Embarked for North Africa on the 18-05-1943,
Disembarked at North Africa on the 27-05-1943,
Posted to X(IV) on the 27-05-1943,
Transferred to the Lancashire Fusiliers 2nd Battalion, 14-06-1943,
Missing believed POW in Italy on the 26-10-1943,
POW in German hands at Stalag VII A on the 13-11-1943,
Returned POW on the 22-04-1945,
Discharged on the 11-01-1946.

Id like to know a little bit about what his Battalions did during his time with them but dont know how to find that out? Also is there anywhere that might hold photos of his Battalions?

Thanks for any help you can give Craig

Hi Craig,

If you checkout the section on the website about the 11th Battalion you will see that I have just added some more information about the 11th Battalion between 1940 to 1942.

Select the 11th Battalion from the BATTALIONS drop-down list then select "1940 - 1942".

Hope this is of some help.

Hi Craig,

You could try and contact the Regimental Archives at Worcester they may be able to help. Their contact details are:
The Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire)
Dancox House, Pheasant Street, Worcester, WR1 2EE
Tel: 01905 721982
Email: museummercian@btconnect.com
They have a fixed non-returnable search fee of is £25.

I do have a large group photo of all the men and officers in HQ and Support Company (11th Battalion) taken at Ashridge Forest 1942. There are no names on the photo but your grandad may be on it if you can recognise him! I do have names of all the officers and a few of the men. I will email you a copy of this photo in high resolution so you can zoom in and check all the faces (the file size is large about 3 MBytes). Let me know if you can identify him on the photo.

Regards,

Louis
