Private Charles George DAYUS (5252820)
“Scatty” Dayus as he was known was recommended for a Periodical Military Medal by the Commanding Officer, Lieut.-Col. R. E. Osborne-Smith on the 10th October 1944.

“Private DAYUS has been a batman in ‘A’ Coy, 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment throughout the operations in N.W. Europe. On one occasion Private DAYUS gave invaluable help in the reorganisation of Company H.Q. when all Officers had become casualties. He has throughout the Campaign been a first class runner and has frequently carried ammunition under fire to forward sections when they were running short of ammunition. During the operations in extending the bridgehead across the RIVER SEINE on 27 Aug, the Battalion became engaged in very heavy fighting in wooded country NORTH of the River. Private DAYUS was slightly wounded and sent back to the CCP to have a piece of shrapnel taken out of his right hand. Within two hours he was back with the Company when the Battle was at it’s height and carried out hid duties as before giving invaluable help in maintaining the supply of ammunition and obtaining information. His constant devotion to duty and great courage in all operations against the enemy is worthy of the highest praise.”
Background:
Charles George Dayus was born at Tenbury, Shropshire on the 20th June 1920. He joined the Worcestershire Regiment in September 1939. In June 1944 he landed in Normandy with ‘A’ Company and became batman and runner to Major K. R. H. James. He was mentioned in despatches in December 1940. At an investiture on the 18th March 1945, at Afferden, The Netherlands, he received his Military Medal. In April 1946 he was demobbed. After the war he became a butcher until he retired in 1990.
Charles Dayus died at Tenbury Wells on the 10th November 1999, age 79.
