Colonel Archibald Montgomery MAXWELL
Commanded the 36th Regiment of Foot (1st Battalion) from August 1834 to May 1845.
(became 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in 1881)
  

 

Archibald Montgomery Maxwell joined the army as Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, his commission being dated 1st July 1801. On 17th of May 1803, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and on 1st of February 1808, Captain. He served in the campaign in Calabria, 1806, and commanded the artillery that besieged Scylla Castle. Served subsequently on the eastern coast of Spain, under the command of Lieutenant-General Lord William Bentinck, and assisted at two sieges of the fortress of Tarragona. Also took part in the Italian campaign, and was Brigade-Major to the artillery at the capture of Genoa 18th of April 1814.

On 27th of May 1825, he was promoted Brevet-Major, and on 12th of December 1826, he was passed to the unattached list. On 24th January 1828, he was transferred to the 95th Foot, and on 25th of November of same year was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel (unattached list). On 22nd of August 1834, he was transferred to the 36th Regiment, which he commanded till his death, and on 23rd of November 1841, he was promoted Brevet-Colonel.

He died on 21st of May 1845.
