Lieut.-Colonel William Ernest SYKES
Commanded the 9th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment from 1914 to January 1915.
 
Son of Major-General H. P. Sykes (Bombay Lancers), and Mrs. M. A. Sykes; 

William Ernest Sykes was commissioned as a 2/Lieutenant into
The York and Lancaster Regiment. He was Promoted as a Lieutenant in to the Lancashire Fusiliers on the 10th August 1900.

Lieut.-Colonel William Ernest Sykes served with the Lancashire Fusiliers in the South African War, first as a lieutenant and then as a Captain. He was mentioned twice in despatches for his gallant service. 

Lieut.-Colonel William Ernest Sykes had been a substantive Major attached to the 5th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment on the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, and was given temporary rank of Lieut.-Colonel on appointment to command the 9th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment that same year.

Husband of Mrs. O. B. Sykes, of Stone House, Forest Row, Sussex. Served in the South African Campaign.

Died 8th January 1915, aged 41. He is buried at Coleman's Hatch (Holy Trinity) Church yard, Sussex.
