Roll of Honour - South Africa 1900 - 1902

The Boer War lasted from 11th October 1899 to 31st May 1902.  During that period over 20,000 British soldiers lost their lives (killed in action, died of wounds or died from disease).  It is interesting to note that two thirds of all deaths was due to disease.
 
At the outbreak of the Boer War both the 1st and 2nd Battalions were mobilised and sailed to South Africa.  The 2nd Battalion (including a company of men from the Worcestershire Volunteer Battalions) was the first to arrive and landed at Cape Town on the 10th January 1900, and as a result saw more action and had more casualties.  The 1st Battalion arrived in South Africa at the end of March 1900 and during April they concentrated at Edenburg.

The 6th (Militia) Battalion also served in South Africa but from the end of December 1901 and were mainly involved in blockhouse duty in Cape Colony.

Although the 4th Battalion were sent to South Africa in February 1902, they were not involved in any fighting.  Their duty was to guard prisoners.
 



Removing the war dead from the battlefield
 

During the Boer War the Worcestershire Regiment lost  5 officers, including the commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion. There were some 220 other ranks who lost their lives, many due to disease.

Lieutenant Oliver Tyser BENTLEY (2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regt.)
Killed at Bethlehem, 29th December 1900, aged 20.  Born March 1880.

Lieutenant William Harold CATHCART (3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regt.)
Died of enteric at Mafeteng, Basutoland, 7th January 1902, aged 21.  Son of Colonel A.M. Cathcart (Grenadier Guards), of Ripon.  Born May 1880.

Lieutenant-Colonel Charles CONINGHAM (2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regt.)
Killed in action at Rensburg, 12th February 1900, aged 49.  Son of Lieut-General Henry Coningham (Madras Light Cavalry).  Born in Bangalore, 1851. Husband of Constance Foote. Served in the Sudan 1885-6 (medal and Khedives star). 

Brevet-Major Arthur Kennedy STUBBS (2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regt.)
Killed in action at Rensburg 12th February 1900, aged 32.  Son of Major-General F. W. Stubbs (Royal Artillery). Born December 1867 at Meerut, India.  Served Niger 1898 (wounded, MID, medal and bar). 

Captain Berkeley Hardinge THOMAS (2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regt.)
Wounded at Rensburg, 12th February 1900.  Died 20th February 1900 (age 35) at Portland Hospital, Rondebosch.  Born January 1865.
