1846

The 1845-46 Sikh War (The First Sikh War) was a difficult one, as the Sikh
army was well-trained and well armed. As a result, British
Casualties were heavy. The campaign was short and concentrated,
lasting only three months. However, the Sikhs were to return for a further
conflict with the British two years later (The Second Sikh War).

Before
the action at Ferozeshah on the 21st December 1885, the effective strength
of the 29th Foot (Worcestershire Regiment) was 28 Officers and 765 other
ranks. After the first battle at Ferozeshah the battalion suffered 2
officers and 52 other ranks killed in action and a further 38 men died of
their wounds. This battle was fought on the shortest day of the year
and commenced for it was light.
In February 1846 at the Battle of Sobraon the 29th Foot lost a further 1
officer and 35 other ranks killed in action, and a further 3 officers and
23 other ranks died of their wounds.
One officer of the 29th Foot was attached to the 50th Foot for the first
battle at Mudki (Moodkee). He was wounded and then killed by a group
of Sikhs.

Additional
Information
Lieutenant Octavius Carey (age 25), included in the above list, was
attached to the 50th Foot Regiment. He was killed at the battle of
Mudki on the 18th December 1845. While lying wounded he was 'hacked
to pieces' by a group of Sikhs. His remains were burried by his
fellow officers in the field where he fell.
Captain Frederick Coventry (age 25) served at Sobraon in February 1846.
However, he died of disease only a few months later on the 29th July
1846. His grave is in Kasauli Cemetery.
Captain Walter Kirby (age 27) served in the Sutlej campaign where he was
severely wound. Although he survived after the battles he finally
died a year later on the 4th August 1847. His grave is in Kasauli
Cemetery.
