William Hancox? WW1

Postby alandeej » Thu Mar 01, 2007 12:32 am

I'm trying to find information on my grandad and I have looked through all the other posts on here, but you all have service numbers to help you, I haven't! I've got my dads dog tags from when he served in the RAF in WW2, but not my grandads.
All I have is his name and birth place. I was told that my grandad sent his uniform back as his heart wasn't in the Army, so was arrested, how true that is I don't know?
I know he got wounded around 1916, and was robbed by the men who was his stretcher bearers, tried to get his wedding ring off too!
His name was William Hancox from Birmingham, I don't know his age, as I know he lied about his age to get into the Army. He came back to England alive, my dad was born in 1916 and my grandad died in 1957, and my dad in 1987, so I cannot ask him. I'm 42 yrs old now and my children want to know about their family, so any help would be grateful?

Re; 8th Battalion, William Hancox?

Postby alandeej » Thu Mar 01, 2007 9:07 pm

I have just been looking at the photo section of this site and there is a photo of the 8th Battalion (1914-1915) and the third one on the right stood up just looks like my grandad William Hancox, is there anyway that the owner of that photo know the names on that photo?
It's just a shot-in-the-dark!

Hi Dee,

I check the recorded deaths in 1957 and came up with 4 possible William Hancox who died that year in the Midlands area:
William Hancox - died age 77 - Coventry.
William Hancox - died age 63 - Birmingham.
William Hancox - died age 95 - Dudley.
William A. Hancox - died age 86 - Wolverhampton.

Could one of the above be your granddad?

The WW1 Medals Index cards records shows a number of possible matches - detailed below (their army number in brackets):

William H. Hancox (23042) Worcestershire Regiment.
William Hancox (8896) Worcestershire Regiment Depot.
William Hancox (1964) Worcestershire Regiment.
William Hancox (39578) Worcestershire Regiment - was previously with the South Staffordshire Regiment and at that time his number was 25615.
William Hancox (241630) South Staffordshire Regiment - was previously with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and at that time his number was 54626.
William Hancox (19168) South Staffordshire Regiment (became Acting Corporal).
William Hancox (7368) South Staffordshire Regiment.
William Hancox (8570) South Staffordshire Regiment.

Hope the above helps narrow down your search a little.

Regards,

Louis

Many, many thanks for your help, the only one on there would be the one age 63 and died in Birmingham. How did you find this as I'm with ancestry.co.uk and I couldn't find anything on there. Can you tell me how to find out more information on what you have posted? I say this as I need to know if the one you found who died in B'ham age 63, does it tell you their address or spouse?
My grandad died at Rocky Lane Perry Barr, B'ham, and my Nan's name was Florence May Hancox. I need to be 100%, as this one sounds the right one, as there couldn't be that many William Hancox's that was in Worcester Regiment?

I thank you for your post, it is most grateful!
