Hi everyone. I am trying to find out as much as I can about my Gt Grandfather, Edward Pimm. From the medal card his regt no. is 8420. He enlisted in Aug 1914 and demobilised in June 1919. He was possibly in the 2nd battallion???
If anyone has any information I would be really grateful

Hello Mandy,
welcome to the Forum. Yes your great grandfather was in the 2nd Battalion but he definitely enlisted some time before August 1914. What makes you say he enlisted in August 1914, please? To help us look him up, what do you know of his military career?

I am back online! This is all I know of my Gt Grandad's military life.
From a military genealogy site I found the National Roll of the Great War and this is what they had about Edward Pimm
PIMM, E., Corporal, Worcestershire Regiment. Volunteering in August 1914, he proceeded to the Western Front shortly afterwards, and there saw severe fighting in various sectors. He took part in the Battles of the Marne, the Aisne, Ypres, Hill 60, Festubert, Loos, Vimy Ridge and the Somme, and many other engagements until the cessation of hostilities. He returned home for demobilisation in June 1919 and holds the 1914 Star, and the General Service and the Victory medals.
It then has his address, which was definately the right address. On the medal cards I have found a Edward Pimm, Worcestershire reg. The dates are given as 1914-1920. And his reg no is 8420.
Apart from a photo, (which I have tried to send to the webmaster, but I don't think it has been received yet), this is all I have, so any information would be great.

Morning Mandy,
I need to Know when Edward Pimm was born and where. The date of birth does not need to be exact, the year will do. Do you know where he was living in 1913/14? This information helps decide if he was a Regular or Special Reserve soldier.

Thank you Mike.
Edward was born 1887 in Birmingham, probably 24th October. The family all lived in Small Heath area of Birmingham, so it was likely that he was living in Small Heath 1913/14. The last address I have of his family was Oxford Terrace, Bolton Road, Small Heath.

sorry off on holiday tomorrow, so short reply, just to show I have not forgotten you. Edward either joined as a Regular in 1904 when he was 17 or more likely he joined as a Special Reserve in 1911. He was DEFINITELY in long before 1914. He is on the original Embarkation list of the 2nd Battalion when they left Southampton on 12th August 1914. To be on that list, anyone had to have a minimum of 6 months previous service. My grandfather was with him! EDWARD'S name is on the Honoured Embarkation panels in Worcester Cathederal, he is entry number 880. He fits the bill for Regular or Special Reserve, age and location could put him in either group. It is the bit about him volunteering in 1914, that makes me think he was Special Reserve. The regulars had no choice, they went where ever ordered and when told. The S.R. , did have an element of volunteering. It is unlikely he stayed in the 2nd Bn. all the way through the war. Have you PlumPudding his Medal Index Card yet? If you have not, look at the posting "My Grandfather" by Paul . It is on the 1st world war section of this Forum and tells you how.

Once again, thank you so much. I am going to pass this information onto Edwards 2 surviving children (my grandmother and her brother). His son was very young when he died and never really knew him. He has asked for any information about his dad, Edward. It will mean so much to him.
I did find out that Edward threw his medals in Small Heath Lake, Birmingham in a temper because he couldn't get any welfare assistance for his family, shame isn't it?

thank you so much Clive. Mike and I had discussed it earlier in the thread. It's interesting as the date of Edward joining up does not tally with what Mike has kindly found out for me. Am I right in thinking that the information submitted to the National Roll of the British Army was given by the soldiers relatives? Which I guess is where the dicrepancy lies, they obviously got their dates wrong.

It is quite possible that reletives may have given these details In the Roll no number is given just that he volunteered in August 1914 But the number is the all important thing and Mike would know he is a master of Regimental numbers . I myself I am afraid am not. anyway what I have done is scanned the piece in The Rol and will Email it to you
