what a wonderful site.
I am trying to track down my grandfathers service record. luckily i have pictures of him (and the whole battalion) in 'c' company 2nd battalion - which i am gradully scanning and sending to the site
My grandfather was a keen sportsman and several of the pictures are of the Hockey team, my mother remembers him saying he was also in the pole vault - but the pole broke. When he married in 1930 he was at crownhill (luckily his service no was on the marriage certificate) and the photos of the regiment are dated 1930-33 Malta.
I'd love to find out more about him - where would i be able to get a copy of his service record? I'm also trying to get hold of a copy of his fathers record as well (62364 4th monmouth regt in 1919) - is there a central place i could write to and get a copy of both?

Hi Lesley,

For Officers or Soldiers whose regular or reserve service ended between 1921 and 1997 you can request details of their service record (for a fee) from:

Army Personnel Centre
HQ Secretariat
Historical Disclosures
Mail Point 400
Kentigern House
65 Brown Street
Glasgow
G2 8EX
Tel: 0845 600 9663, option 1, then option 3

I have also had a look through some of the old Regimental Magazines of the 1930's and found the following references to your grandfather as follows:

In 1930 at the Third Command Athletic Meeting, your grandfather then with the rank of Private Windmill represented the 2nd Battalion in the Two Mile Relay Race.

The 2nd Battalion Individual and Inter-Company Athletic Championships took place on the 30th April 1931 and 2nd May 1931 (Malta). Your grandfather then with the rank of Lance Corporal took 2nd Place in the Individual 800 Yards Race (he was with "C" Company). He also came joint 2nd Place in the Pole Vault. He was also awarded (together with 8 other men) his Athletic Colours for the 1931 Season.

Battalion Inter-Company Relay Championships was held on Saturday 23rd April 1932 (Malta). Your grandfather Lance Corporal Robert Windmill was a member of "C" Company 1 Mile Relay Team who took first place with a time of 3 minutes 47 seconds (the other members of the team were Lance Corporal Malin, Lieut. Nott and 2nd Lieut. Wood).

On the 11th and 12th May 1932 the Malta Command Athletic Meeting was held at Calafrana (the R.A.F. base). Your grandfather Lance Corporal Robert Windmill represented the 2nd Battalion in both the One Mile Relay (other member of the team were Lieut. Nott, Lieut. Graves-Morris and Lance Corporal Malin) and the Two Mile Relay Race (other members of the team were Lieut. Graves-Morris, Private Wren and Lance Corporal Jones). At this event your grandfather together with 13 other men were awarded their Battalion Athletic Colours 1932.

At the conclusion of the Hockey season 1931-32, the Inter-Company Hockey knock-out competion took place on St. George's ground (Malta). "C" Company again won the shield after defeating "HQ" Company 1 - 0 in the semi-final, and "A" Company 3 - 0 in the final. "C"Company winning team members were; Privatr Dyas (goal), Capt. G. A. Sheppard and Private Russell (backs), L/Cpl. Windmill, Private Aldridge, L/Sgt. Trudge (half-backs), Sgt. Tuck, C/Sgt. Longmore, Private George, Lieut. D. H. Nott, Private Willis (forwards).

Hope this bit of information is of interest.

You could also try contacting the Regimental Archives the contact details are on the home page of this website. As they are all volunteers they always welcome any donation that people are able to give to support the work they do on maintaing the Regiment records and archives.

Best regards,

Louis
