Lieut.-General Edward Arthur Somerset CB

Appointed Colonel of the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment on the 19th December 1881.

Lieut.-General Somerset was born in 1817. He was appointed Ensign of R. Brigade on the 29th January 1836. Was promoted to Lieutenant on the 9th July 1840, Captain on the 31st January 1845. He served in the Kaffir War of 1852-53 and on the 12 November 1854 was promoted Major.

He was present at the battles of Alma, Balaklava, Inkerman, also at the siege and fall of Sevastopol. Was promoted to Lieut.-Colonel on the 23rd March 1855, Brev. Colonel on the 29yh May 1858, Major General on the 6th March 1868 and Lieut.-General on the 1st October 1877.

He was appointed Colonel of the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment on the 19th December 1881 on the departure of General Longfield.

On the 14th September 1884 he was transferred to the position of Colonel Commandant of the 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifles.

Lieut.-General Somerset died at his home, Troy House, Monmouth on the 12th March 1886.
