Roll of Honour - Malaya Emergency 1948 - 1960 - Worcestershire Regiment

This section provides details of all those men of the Worcestershire Regiment who gave their lives in the Malaya Emergency (covers period 1948 to 1960)

The Malayan Emergency was declared on 18th June 1948 after three estate managers were murdered in Perak, northern Malaya, by guerrillas of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP), an outgrowth of the anti-Japanese guerrilla movement, which had emerged during the Second World War.

On the 24th May 1950 the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment sailed from Liverpool to Singapore. Many of the men that sailed were new recruits doing their National Service and had only been with their unit one week.

From 1951, the British started a campaign to ‘win the hearts and minds’ of the Malays, as well as defeating the CT (Communist Terrorists) guerrillas. The tactic was to isolate the guerrillas from community support, and drive them into the jungle where existence was difficult.

It was an intense 12-year jungle war fought by the British, British Commonwealth and Malay forces against the army of the Malayan Communist Party led by Communist fanatic Chin Peng.
