Worcestershire Regiment War Diaries - 1914-1919

Army war diaries provided a daily record of operations, intelligence reports and other events. One copy was sent into the War Office, and is now held at the PRO at Kew (National Archives). Other copies were kept by the unit, and may now be with the regimental records at their Regimental HQ or at Regimental Museums.

The commander of every military unit (Battalion, Division etc.) was the responsibility to ensure that the War Diary was kept up to date each day. It was usually written up each evening by a specific junior officer (i.e. Adjutant) and usually signed off by a senior officer or the commanding officer. The War Diary was compiled by month for every month that the unit was on active service.

Some war diaries may be difficult to read. Many in World War 1 were scribbled hastily in pencil. Others are the second carbon copy of the original. some war diaries are missing, due to lost during action. Most war diaries use obscure abbreviations which also make them difficult to understand to the untrained reader.

In addition to the completed official War Diary Army Form C. 2118, sometimes there were also maps, sketches, messages, Operational Orders included as appendices to the official diary. It would also give details of casualties numbers and list the names of officers wounded or killed.
