Army Lists of the Worcestershire Regiment
Some of the first records of British Army Officers were kept as early as 1702. These records listed the names of all commissioned officer, their regiment, and usually the date they received their current commission and when they retired.
The first official Army list was published in 1740 and since 1754 they have been published regularly as annual lists from 1754-1878, and quarterly lists where produced from 1879-1922. Since 1939 they have been classified, and so are not available to the general public.
Officers were not entitled to a pension as of right until 1871. Before then, officers wishing to retire sold their commissions or went on half pay. Half pay simply became a retaining fee which was paid to the officer, so long as he held a commission and was still (in theory) available for future service. Officers on half pay can be traced in the British Army Lists, which gives date of commencement of half pay: however half-pay officers are not always indexed. As more lists become available then they will be added to this section. Hart's Army ListHart's Army List was an unofficial list, produced between 1839 and 1915. These lists are useful because they contain details of war service from 1839, which the official lists did not do until 1881. |
